The former floor plan of the church of Santa Maria del Piano (Rieti, Italy) is still strongly recognizable, and this project aims at evoking what the ancient image of this place looked like: The new structure is ephemeral, evanescent and completely reversible. It’s based on a structural framework of 1,25 x 1,25 m, with wooden beams and posts that compose every vertical, horizontal and sloped architectural element. This rigorous module recalls the symmetry and geometry of the former abbey, and simplifies the construction method. Different meditation spaces are provided, all inspired by the elements that characterize the architectural typology of the church (the chapel, the altar, etc.), each one with its own soul, its level of intimacy and its unique way of creating a harmony with the surrounding natural context.
